Prayer helps us Align with God’s Will.

Written By Eddie Duke

Our Bible reading today is Matthew 26 and in Matthew 26, we see Jesus entering the Garden of Gethsemane prior to His crucifixion.

In verse 39, it reads

“Going a little father He fell facedown and prayed, ‘My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me.  Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

I blinked when I read that.  I know there are some deep waters in theology here as to Jesus and His Divine nature and what Jesus saw as God that would lead Him to ask for the “cup” to be passed from Him, but I want to stick to a point here in this verse.

The point is that the primary purpose of prayer is to always line us up with God’s will.

Did you catch that?  Jesus’ prayer in the garden did not deliver His desire to have the cup passed from Him. What Jesus’ prayer did was to line Him up with God’s will.  That is always the point of prayer and that is why we need it.

I say this because we discussed Sunday that our next step in a better path this year is to SERVE.  Each of us through our faith in Jesus is gifted to serve.  You may be asking what you can do or what you may be gifted at.

For two years now, we have planned and talked about PCBC 7.  In it lies the plan with which we will rebuild in a healthy and productive way.   One of the areas that is in this plan is PRAYER.  Prayer is what will line us up with God’s will as we move ahead.  Is prayer an area you would like to serve in?

Our next step to a better year is through service.  We are all gifted to serve…we gratify others through our service…we glorify God through our service.
