Our memory verse is Matthew 1:23 –
“See, the Virgin will become pregnant, And give birth to a son, And they will call Him Immanuel, which is translated, ‘God with us.’”
One of the main reasons that I am a Southern Baptist today is because of the deep roots and commitment that Southern Baptists have in missions. For 175 years, the Southern Baptist Convention has maintained an uninterrupted witness among the nations, in spite of famine, war, and civil unrest. 132 years ago, we first took up a Christmas offering for missions. This resolve to go has come with sacrifice.
About 60 missionaries and children have died because of tragic circumstances while serving with the International Mission Board, since it was founded in 1845. The causes include accidents such as drowning and car and plane crashes and ships lost at sea. They also include wars and terrorist acts. Some were targeted specifically because of their faith or missionary service. Of the 60, 20 lost their lives as a result of human hostility in a cross-cultural setting.
Wow! I am thankful for the people who have and do risk their lives because they believe and are dedicated to the truth of Christmas and desire that people everywhere need to hear of the HOPE that Jesus brings. Please pray for continued protection of missionaries and their families serving cross-culturally and often in difficult areas around the globe. Give to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering to continue to help people who are serving.
