Mark 1:22 says
“They were astonished at His teaching because he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not like the scribes.”
The word ‘authority’ in this verse is the Greek word ‘exousia’.
This word packs some punch. When I was in the Air Force, whenever I got promoted, they would “add a stripe”. I would have to get new shirts and new stripes to have sewn on when it became official. On the first day of wearing new stripes, there was a tradition that people had to “pin them on” What that meant is that they would come up to you and tap your arms with their fists to congratulate your promotion. Of course, some people didn’t just tap – they pounded! I knew who they were and when I saw them coming, I prepared for a punch that was “packed”.
Jesus comes with authority and whenever He arrives, you can be assured that He is going to pack some punch. He is a difference maker. You know that with Jesus, there is nothing impossible.
There is a song called “Way Maker” with lyrics that go like this:
“Way maker, miracle worker, promise keeper, Light in the darkness. My God. That is who You are.”
That is exousia. His authority is grounded in His compassion, mercy, forgiveness and grace. It is what gives us the confidence in the hope He promises.
I am praying for you. Our next step to a better year is through service. We are all gifted to serve…we gratify others through our service…we glorify God through our service. Thank you so much to those who have let me know how you intend on serving in the days and year ahead.
